American Live Stock Inc.

In 1952, Frank Harding and Clint Tomson, experienced stockmen, formed a partnership and founded American Live Stock Insurance Company. Frank was a rancher, cattle buyer and cattle importer/exporter through the Harding & Harding Agency. Clint was a rancher who showed cattle and eventually became the executive secretary and director of the American Shorthorn Breeders Association.

The partnership initially focused on insuring registered cattle, securing coverage on behalf of their clients through Lloyd’s of London. Harding and Harding, as the partnership had always been known, held the first general livestock contract with Lloyd’s of London in the United States.

During the 1970s, Harding & Harding/American Live Stock Insurance Company expanded their insurance protection to include horses. Currently, American Live Stock Inc. has a significant presence in the equine industry insuring quality animals in several breed associations as well as having insured several Kentucky Derby winners.

American Live Stock Inc. is actively involved in the livestock community. From 2001 to 2003, company president, Duncan Alexander, held the non-veterinarian position on the Board of Directors of the American Association of Equine Practitioners. Beginning in 1989, American Live Stock Inc., in partnership with the American Association of Equine Practitioners, annually provides eight scholarships to fourth year veterinary students who plan a career focused on the health and welfare of the horse.
